Physical Intervention / Restraint Course
This course is aimed at professionals that deal with violent / potentially violent individuals and is usually taken up after a risk assessment has identified a training need. This is an ideal course for those working with young offenders, youth projects, residential care homes and within schools.
In certain professions it becomes necessary to physically restrain people to prevent them from harming themselves or other people.
Different professions have adopted different terminology, Physical Interventions, Control Techniques, Restraints, C&R.. It all amounts to the same thing, preventing other people from moving, or forcibly moving someone into another area.
Many people at management level are understandably concerned at the prospect of teaching their staff any physical techniques. We are confident that we can teach techniques which will work, be legal and fit within the ethical framework for your profession.
We always insist on teaching staff how to accurately report the use of any physical technique. We honestly believe that lack of proper reporting training is the area most likely to bring any organisation into disrepute.
Restraint techniques, if taught correctly, are a great tool and can be used to help maintain a safe working environment for your staff and to exercise your duty of care to those on your premises.
One alarming trend we have identified is the practice of trying to make techniques which have been developed for use with children and young adults with learning disabilities, fit within mainstream education. There is a major difference between that target group and a fully grown 15 year old intent on harming someone. This person knows exactly what they are doing and outside school, their behaviour would be classed as criminal, often needing the police to deal with them.
